Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
